There is little doubt that one of the most rewarding parts of the work done at NCCF, driven by the generosity of our donors, is seeing the impact it has on the community. Read on as one scholarship recipient expresses the difference it has made for them:
I would like to open by giving my sincere thanks for receiving the Ruth Barker Winch Scholarship. It has been incredibly helpful for me and my family over the past four years. I have been able to attend my top choice university due in part to this scholarship. Going to an out-of-state school - West Virginia University - has not been inexpensive, and without this scholarship, I would not have been able to afford to attend. WVU is an RI research institution (a category that the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education uses to indicate universities in the United States that engage in the highest levels of research activity) and I have been blessed to be able to participate in research for all four years of college. My current lab has published two papers since I joined and I will be named on the publication we are working on now. My experience in the lab has shaped my future plans and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of something that will have an impact on people in the future.
I will be applying for Master’s programs in Genetic Counseling starting this September for the 2022 admission cycle. I hope to attend either Ohio State, the University of Texas, or the University of Arizona. Genetic Counseling is a growing field with many opportunities accross different disciplines. I am looking at going into either cancer genetics or prenatal counseling.
With Sincere Gratitude,
Jessica Link
